Photo of VineyardsRobert Mondavi Private Selection wines benefit from the unique range of climates and soils found throughout the Central and North Coast appellations of California. Our Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Johannisberg Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah and Pinot Noir are crafted with grapes from the Central Coast, primarily from Monterey County vineyards. We also source Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Fumé Blanc from the North Coast, primarily from vineyards in Mendocino County.

Central Coast
San Benito, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties

The Central Coast appellation is characterized by sandy soil, foggy mornings, warm sun and cool ocean breezes. Monterey County, the largest appellation on the Central Coast, is home to diverse climates, making it ideal for many grape varieties. The 75-mile long Salinas Valley within Monterey County begins at Monterey Bay and runs southeastward. Flanked by the Santa Lucia and Gabilan mountain ranges, the valley becomes a wind tunnel, drawing fog and cold air off the Pacific Ocean. This rugged, maritime climate provides an unusually long growing season, resulting in smaller crops of well-balanced grapes with concentrated varietal flavor.

South of San Luis Obispo the Santa Lucia Mountains abruptly break and run east-west instead of north-south, forming the unusual climate of the highly acclaimed Santa Maria Valley wine region.

North Coast
Mendocino, Lake, Sonoma and Napa Counties

Mendocino and Lake Counties experience a short growing season, with late frosts in spring, early rains and frosts in fall, and higher average rainfall than Napa and Sonoma Counties and the Central Coast. Summer daytime temperatures are warm, while cold nights often dip into the thirty degrees. This dramatic fluctuation softens the tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel and lends lush fruit character to the Fumé Blanc, allowing us to craft approachable, flavorful wines.

Due to the longer, warmer growing seasons of Napa and Sonoma Counties, fruit from these regions adds depth, color and richness to the red wines of Robert Mondavi Private Selection.
